Grammar attack: Reddog, please review the difference between an apostrophe and a comma. If your apostrophe key is broken, get a new keyboard. Thanks.

Mayor, I think you are confusing haters as only existing for people who have success, fame or people who do a million good things first. That isn't what I'm talking about. If you're happy and doing things you enjoy, you'll get haters eventually.

Haters are wannabe judges who are upset they aren't doing what you're doing, or that they can't be as happy doing it. They don't practice the Live and Let Live Philosophy. They seem to think their is some rules or standards you MUST stay with, otherwise you are a.... whatever.

You know, it's hard to not respond, and it's hard to remember that they aren't the majority, just the most vocal. If you get some positive comments, I imagine there is a ratio to balance it all out. In the end, I don't know if it matters (Sigh, I had to play the fool to learn. But, I am learning).

Haters 102: http://theflipfloplifestyle.co m/2008/01/30/dealing-with-hate rs-and-negativity/

Since I know there are some issues with people who hate all things Detroit/DYES, here's an excerpt:

'The comments themselves don’t affect me and normally I wouldn’t validate them with any sort of response but as I thought about it, I realized there is a lesson here that may benefit many people who may find themselves in a similar situation. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that as you progress and grow in your professional life, your spiritual life and in your personal life there are going to be people in this world that start to dislike you for what you have accomplished or what you are trying to accomplish.

It’s sad indeed that there are people who will take pleasure in seeing you stumble or worse, actively try and do you some sort of harm. At first you may not imagine that this would be the case, but the minute you make the decision to excel or achieve at a level beyond the status quo, you become a target for small minded and ineffective individuals that hate to see anyone try and better themselves.

This can come in many forms - perhaps it is the person at your job who is in line for the same managerial position as you and may try to sabotage your advancement instead of just doing the best they can. Maybe it is one of your friends or family who simply tells you over and over that you can’t start your own business and succeed. Maybe it’s people in chat rooms and on forums who bad mouth you merely because you are starting to make a name for yourself.
'

PS: Retroit, you speak like a fish... and... and your Momma dresses you funny. So, get out of here. :-)

Jimaz and Johnlodge, you are now awesome. Thank you for that!

Gistok, that is one of the good things about DetroitYES. When you say something really dumb, most give you a chance of redeeming yourself, offer advice, or they just forget.

Unfortunately, we're often so kind to people who consistently make mind-blowingly stupid posts that they don't realize how stupid they sound, and keep making stupid posts. By the time anyone gets tired of it and tries to rein them in, the forum has become so clogged with stupidity you can't even breathe. I'm of the opinion that idiots should be dealt with promptly, succinctly, and honestly, because otherwise they'll never get any smarter. If we drive them away in the process because they think we're "being mean," so be it. At least we don't have to read their moronic drivel anymore.

On a future upgrade to DYes, aditional forum features could help. Personal "notes" discretely between each other by clicking username. And you can ignore or block receiving personal notes from someone if irritating. Lot of features we don't (yet) have on DYes.

DetroitYES used to have that option using email. I don't know why it was disabled.

I think Lowell recently said he was working on a new system but it was being difficult.

"...If we drive them away in the process because they think we're "being mean,"..."

I agree Bearinabox, especially the part about "being mean".

To a forumer, you know who you are:

For the love of gawd, grow a pair already. I'm really, really tired of reading about how people are being "mean" to you.

Based on your posts, I suspect this "mean" stuff is causing you a lot of turmoil. I have some advice for you in that regard.

Since I've had to read your unsolicited whining, you have to read my unsolicited advice. Fair is fair. Here are your options* (pick one):

1. Stand your ground.

2. Change your behavior.

3. Go away

*remember, whining is not an option.

So, you are implying that it takes one person (you) to decide what is "moronic"? The only thing bigger than a moron spouting off dribble, is the person wasting their time yelling or talking about them. Worry about yourself first.

Hey, one can always go elsewhere if you don't like the way things are going here.

I think Bearinabox is absolutely right. Calling stupidity for what is needs to be done. And I think that there's more than one person here that's sick and tired of reading stupidity.

Some people might like the mindless drivel, but I think that there's far better conversation to be had without the BS and drama.

I am not directing the following statement at any individual person. Honest, I'm not.

Generally speaking, there usually are about three or four ways of expressing a disapproving (or even a sharply objecting) response without being mean-spirited, cruel, or deliberately insulting. If you are unable, or unwilling, to find one of them, YOU are an asshole.
Of course, if the other person has struck first, in that manner, the above direction is suspended.

Vetalalumni, I'm not saying they aren't.

I know they aren't talking about me, but I think they are just being mean too. They aren't doing it to teach anyone anything. They say they are, but they aren't. They're doing it for attention. That isn't to mention they aren't practicing what they preach, or that being an donkey to mentioned personality types, usually makes that type of person talk more, and get stupider in retaliation.

They do less than the talkers.

Think about this;

Gistok isn't just watching some moronic talkers, ad nausea. He is also watching the self righteous teachers yell at air. So, you have the people not thinking and saying whatever comes to mind, then you have the people who are past that, but are still in the same boat because they are wasting even more time reading and responding. Those people waste hours, and the people who dig up dirt are wasting entire days.

Gistok isn't just forced to sift through posts by moronic talkers, he's sifting through the posts of moronic people who haven't learned how to ignore people they don't like. Of course, to the Gistoks, it is irrelevant; it's all just garbage.

PS: This thread is proof of ridicule leading to extra talk. They ridiculed Retroit, and he didn't just talk more, he posted a whole new 50 post thread that shouldn't have existed. Now notice what happens when someone posts something unpopular or disruptive, and no one says anything.

Don't get it confused. These groups are incapable of teaching each other much of anything. They view each other as morons, and will NEVER listen to each other. Ignore and move on. We all aren't moving enough to worry about such things right now. Now just isn't the time to keep up sibling rivalries.

Idiots are not harmless. They drive good people away en masse, particularly when the folks who know what they're talking about start to get the impression that they're valued less highly as forum contributors than the exuberant morons who can barely string a sentence together. I am not by nature a mean-spirited person, and I would not have made that post if I didn't think this issue had wider-reaching effects than my own annoyance. For the most part, I do ignore stupid posts and the people who make them.

Bear, you're right, but you have to speak in a way that will make your audience listen and understand. It's like yelling at a Englishman in Spanish. If you can't seem to reach someone, learn how, or just save your breath.

The lazy person inside wishes there was a thumbs up/down button that you could just click.

The downside of such a system is that it would drive away the asshats. A good asshat is great for conversation, otherwise the forum would look like this:
Yeah

cheesecakefactory
haha
yep

Hey Reddog! Your typing skills are just fine. It just seems that you're typing a comma when you mean to type an apostrophe, which is an easy mistake if you never took typing, since the two look exactly the same on the keyboard.

For an apostrophe, instead of using the key next to the letter M, use the key in the row above that, next to the ENTER key.

:-) :-) :-)

The whole internet has devolved. That's not surprising considering it started with academia and the military. Back then everyone worked to earn brownie points for being helpful.

Online communities with selective membership can still operate that way so I don't see it as a problem.

What's the etymology of "asshat"? Oh.
